Sleep Calculator - Bedtime Suggestions by Sleep Cycles
Enter your wake-up time to see suggested bedtimes aligned with 90-minute sleep cycles. Waking between cycles can help you feel more refreshed.
Wake-Up Time
Based on 90-minute sleep cycles plus 15 minutes to fall asleep.
Suggested Bedtimes
Wake at 7:00 AM
9:45 PM
6 cycles · 9 hours sleep
11:15 PM
5 cycles · 7.5 hours sleep
12:45 AM
4 cycles · 6 hours sleep
Methodology and limitations
Last reviewed:
Methodology
Subtracts a 15-minute fall-asleep buffer from the target wake time, then counts backward in 90-minute sleep cycles to suggest bedtimes aligned with natural sleep-cycle boundaries.
Limitations
Individual sleep cycles vary (roughly 70–110 minutes). This tool uses average cycle length and does not replace clinical sleep assessment for disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnea.

How Sleep Cycle Bedtimes Work
Enter your wake-up time to see suggested bedtimes aligned with 90-minute sleep cycles. Waking between cycles can help you feel more refreshed.
Method used
The calculator takes your target wake-up time, subtracts a 15-minute fall-asleep buffer, and counts backward in 90-minute sleep cycles to suggest bedtimes that align with natural cycle boundaries.
Bedtime = wake time − fall-asleep buffer − (cycles × 90 minutes)
Practical example
To wake at 6:30 AM, going to bed around 10:45 PM supports five 90-minute cycles (7.5 hours of sleep) after a 15-minute buffer to fall asleep.
- Wake-up time in 24-hour format (for example 06:30)
- Optional cycle count presets (4, 5, or 6 cycles)
The result lists suggested bedtimes for each cycle count, sleep hours per option, and 12-hour formatted times.
Assumptions
- Average sleep cycle length is 90 minutes.
- Fall-asleep time defaults to 15 minutes.
- Individual cycle length and sleep quality vary.
What this includes
- Multiple bedtime options by cycle count, sleep duration per option, and 12-hour time formatting.
What this excludes
- Sleep stage tracking, sleep apnea screening, shift-work schedules, jet lag recovery plans, and clinical insomnia treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are sleep cycles 90 minutes?
A full sleep cycle averages about 90 minutes and moves through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. Waking at the end of a cycle rather than mid-deep sleep often feels easier.
How many sleep cycles do I need?
Most adults need 4-6 cycles per night (6-9 hours). Five to six cycles is typical for a full night's rest; four cycles suits shorter sleep schedules.
Why add 15 minutes before bedtimes?
Most people need 10-20 minutes to fall asleep. The calculator subtracts that buffer so your sleep cycles align with your actual lights-out time.
Is this the same as REM sleep tracking?
This uses average cycle length, not personal sleep stage data. Wearables can refine timing, but cycle math is a useful free starting point.
What if I wake up during the night?
Night waking is normal. If you cannot fall back asleep within 20 minutes, some sleep experts suggest getting up briefly rather than forcing sleep.
