How Currency Conversion Works

Convert money between major world currencies using built-in default exchange rates or your own custom rate. Enter an amount, select currencies, and see the converted total plus the effective and inverse exchange rates.

Method used

The calculator multiplies the entered amount by the selected exchange rate. Default rates are static reference values; you can enter a custom rate from your bank or a live feed.

Converted amount = amount × exchange rate

Practical example

Converting $1,000 USD to EUR at a rate of 0.92 gives €920. At 1.08 USD/EUR the same €1,000 equals about $1,080.

The result shows the converted amount, rate used, and inverse rate for reference.

Assumptions

  • Exchange rate is user-selected or entered manually.
  • No spread, commission, or wire fees are deducted.
  • Rates are point-in-time estimates unless you supply a live rate.

What this includes

  • Major currency pairs, amount conversion, custom rate input, and inverse rate display.

What this excludes

  • Live market feeds, bank buy/sell spreads, crypto pairs, forward contracts, and tax reporting on foreign exchange gains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the exchange rates live market rates?

No. Default rates are static reference values for quick estimates, not streaming forex feeds. For payments, enable the custom rate option and paste the rate from your bank, card issuer, or a live market source at decision time. Rates move throughout the day, so stale defaults can misstate travel budgets.

How do I use a custom exchange rate?

Check the custom exchange rate box and enter how many units of the target currency equal one unit of the source currency. For example, if 1 USD equals 0.92 EUR, enter 0.92 when converting USD to EUR. Matching your card’s actual settlement rate produces a more personal estimate than mid-market defaults.

Which currencies are supported?

The calculator includes major currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, INR, MXN, and CNY. Convert between any listed pair with default or custom rates. Exotic pairs or cash desk rates may differ—override with a custom rate when your quote is outside this major-currency set.

What is the inverse exchange rate?

The inverse rate shows how much of the source currency equals one unit of the target currency. If 1 USD equals 0.92 EUR, the inverse is about 1.087 USD per EUR. Inverses help when quotes are published in the opposite direction from the way you want to think about a purchase.

Does this include bank fees or spreads?

No. Banks and card networks often add a markup or spread above the mid-market rate, plus possible foreign transaction fees. Enter a custom rate that mirrors your actual checkout or ATM rate for the best personal estimate. Fee-aware planning prevents underestimating the true cost of spending abroad.
